Installing a second harddisk...

Hi guys,

I'm going to install a secondary hard disk into my pc and I was just wondering if it's ok to put it directly below the primary hd. There is no more space to leave a gap between each hd. Is there a possibility that they could overheat? I'm using a micro atx mobo in a midi tower so things are already a bit cramped...

Any comments?

Cheers.

hmm as long as the airflow is good there should be no problem , what make and model are the hard disks , and what is your ventilation like , oh and max temps for a hdd are like 60c

yip, agreed, HDD are a bit more sensitive to temperature differences due to warping the disc's. However, 60 is an still very safe.

I'd not worry too much about it. What make are you thinking of buying. In my experience Seagate are cool runners, where IBM/Hitachi are pretty good at cooking bacon and eggs.

Ive got a server, and my main desktop with disks next to each other and there are no problems, just make sure there is adequate airflow throughout the case and they will be fine.

might i add fujitsu also are cookin

but yeah seagates run cool in my experience , i havea seagate laptop hdd and a 120gb baracuda desktop and both have never reached 45 my desktop hasnt even reached 40 so tehy run pretty cool so lang as case airflow is good

Just added the SATA hd. Sorry, I don't know what make it is. A friend of mine gave it to me and said that he was having problems with it and windows setup couldn't format it. So, I used windows explorer to browse it, which seemed ok, and then used partition magic to format it. The format went ok, but pm wasn't able to partition it. I then tried to use the windows disk to install windows, but the disk couldn't find the attached hd (which was showing on boot). So, I tried an Linux boot disk, it formatted the hd ok but an error occured during installation of the base system.

Sound like a bust hd? Any hd diagnostic programs I should try out to see if it finds any errors?

Thanks for your help.
