hi,

i recently started a thread about my mates computer and his temperature which he is running at about 60'C and he wants it a bit cooler so i have considered some options for him

from lowest price to highest price (generally n e way)

1. Case Fan
2. New Thermal paste
3. New Heatsink + Fan
4. New Case

so i was thinking as its goin to be the cheapest i wud get him to buy a case fan just to c what differeence he sees in temps

now heres his case but i dnt know what size fan it takes or even what fan to buy ??

http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?ModuleNo=48890&doy=16m5

it def has a whole for a fan near the rear of the case has 4 mounting holes and a mesh grid type thing

so apart from the case fan which im def getting what wud u suggest to get his temps down he wants to overclcok his pentium D but i said i wouldnt advise it until he has dropped his temps ??

im looking for the cheapest way of cooling his pc ?

note : he currently has the side of the pc case off with a household fan pointing at it which only drops the temps by 3 degrees lol

ps im from uk and would ask if your gonna reccomend n e thing try make it off ebuyer.com or mapins.co.uk

I'd go for the best air CPU cooler you can get out there for the intel platform - Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro. It's also one of the cheapest at £13. I use it and look at my sig, that overclocked E4300 has never hit 40 degree's.

on the left hand side, Go to labs, then CPU coolers. CPC is a great mag, just for enthuists like ourselves. Thats a group test of coolers for both intel and AMD platforms. The artic cooler is a fantastic bit of kit, and with active speed controlling the fan speed (through the BIOS) it's almost silent.

Think you should get that, and a couple of case fans to increase the airflow. It'll keep it nice a cool. It's got decent thermal paste on it already, so that's you got 3 outta your 4 already. Be warned though, the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro is big and mighty, just make sure you've plenty of space to install it.

zalman 9700 is a wicked cpu cooler when combined with artic silver 5
also the antic 900 case is an awsome cooler as well
temps would drop sugnificly

hi,

thanks for the replies i think for now im just gonna get him

The arctic cooling heatsink + fan http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/105994

Thermal Paster http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/66688

and a cheap case fan which i still dont know which size to get ??

so ill just try this and send it back if it dont fit

http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/116274

i will be checking if he has space for that fan + heatsink when i can be bothered to get out of bed and go round there

i was also looking at this for his memory which is running at 47'C

http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/52526

wud he c much temp drop in his RAM with that ?

so what you think the temps will drop to with those few extras ?

I'm not sure about the drop in temperature for his memory, I suspect that it's only that high due to the ambiant temperature in the case. I'd get a couple of quiet case fans instead. I use a few akasa ones, and I don't hear them at all.

Anyway, a far far more important point, and that is DONT buy that thermal paste that you've put a link too. It's old old silicon based stuff. It was ok-ish for Durons and lowend Athlon XP's, but is hopeless for any dual core P4's. The Arctic heatsink already has top of the range Arctic Silver on it and doesn't need replaced. You'd ruin any benifits using the thermal paste you've ordered. Even the newest reviews on it are from 2005.

Just the heatsink, a couple of case fans and those memory heat spreaders (if they don't make a huge difference, at least they'd look better and easier to handle)

Make sure that you clean the top of the CPU with a very lightly damped cloth, to remove any old thermal paste before you install the heatsink. Need's to be nice and clean for a good contact.

But I can't stress enough to you not to use that thermal paste that you linked us to. The stuff on the cooler is great stuff, Arctic coolers are going to be using there own TIMs, such as Arctic Silver which is the bees' knees.

oh sorry dint realise the Fan + heatink had thermal paste on it

he only got space for 1 case fan but i have bin looking at this

http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/90622 or
http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/90623

i know they are mainly 2 keep expansion cards kool but wud it improve general air circulation of the whole pc ?

Yeah, one of those would help. I'd try and fill that space for the case fan though too. I'd keep in mind though that you have no real reason to want to lower the temperature, P4 D's are hot runners and it's an ok temperature that it's running at the now. Anyway, it's good to see another ebuyer user, I use them all the time. Make sure you use the £10 off deal if you use the google checkout.

here's a link to a Akasa amber series 80mm (8cm) case fan, make sure it's the right size. If not, get the right size but akasa amber series. There dead silent.

yeah ebuyer is great i built my pc off that site except the case the sent me a dead PSU so instead of waiting fot the return and then delivery on another i went to maplins as im too impatient

and by the way i think theres a link to my case on my first post but i have no idea what kinda fan it takes

wud a picture help if i take 1 ?

I really couldn't say, you'd need to measure the size with a ruler if you dont have the instruction booklet. I've had a look on that site you had a link to, but there's no specifications listed for that case.

I really wouldnt know otherwise. I could guess a 8cm or a 12cm for the back of ti, but I'm really not 100% certian.

Just to double check though, did you make sure that you have enough room around the CPU to fit the arctic cooler, as I did mention that it's pretty big a previous post. I just don't want you getting it, then realising it's to crowded to fit.
