Video Problems

I have had a problem for a while now. I have many different video players:
Windows Media Player
Realplayer
Windows Media Player Classic
Divx Player

With about half of the video files I download, when I open them with any of these players , it comes up with an error message. I know it is not the video which is corrupt because it happens to too many, and I can convert them to quicktime format and they work on quicktime. I really need help to get these working again (and explain it as if you were talking to a computer idiot please)

Whats the error message your getting? Chances are that your missing some CODECS (these convert the video for playback) Download and install this codec pack.

Why not just play ALL movies in the quicktime format?
Go to the movie you have,right click,propierties , then click " opens with" and quicktime. I think It will play all types of movie. ( you will need to do this to ALL movie formats Mpg,mov,avi ,etc.)

The error messages are just the standard error messages for each player. For example, Divx says "unknown exception".
I will try downloading the codec pack now

ace777, not all movie files can be opened by Quicktime unfortunately.
