odd problems with old compaq

i had a friend give me a Compaq presario 6000 to work on. when you plug the power supply in the pc turns on by it's self and then turns right back off after about 3 sec..i have tried 2 different power supplies and did the same thing.any suggestions?

Have you tryed re-seating the power pin on your mother board or even if it is on properly?

by power pin do you mean the are you plug the power supply in?..sorry im still kind of a noob

nm im stupid i know what you are talking about and it has never been moved since the pc was bought and it is connected right now

Dont worry about it have you just tryed re-seating every thing? Sounds like its something from your motherboard rather then the power supply.

I think you need to reapply some thermal paste on the CPU. Thermal features can turn the PC off if it's too high.

it shouldn't heat up to that point, that quickly, should it...?

i have tried reseting the ram a few times and nothing worked and it has on board video so i know that is not the problem
