I wonder if anyone can help?

I have just bought some more memory for my PC, which has an ASROCK P4VT8+ motherboard. The memory is PC3200 (DDR400) DIMM 512Mb. When I install it I get the error windows/system32/config/system file is missing or corrupt. If I remove new memory all OK. However if I remove any 1 other memory stick and put the new one in everything is OK! I have now looked in the motherboard manual (maybe I should have read it before buying?) and it informs me that it supports PC3200 upto a max of 1GB. I have three slots, each with PC3200 of 512mb (before the new memory 1024mb) equaling 1536Mb, so this is probable why it won't work! My question is can I do anything to get the bios to accept 3x512, or can I in the bios turn the memory speed down to PC2700 (DDR333) as it supports max 2gb! If I do this will the 1536 @ 2700 be faster than 1024 @ 3200?

I thought you answered your own question there. If your manual says it supports 1gb and your trying to put in 1.5gbs thats why its not working. But then you say support says it can run 2gbs? Well which is it? If it truly is 1gb then it won't run 1.5gbs. If it is 2gbs maybe it was a bios update have you updated your bios? If the board only supports PC2700 your PC3200 should revert to PC2700 and run.

Boards are picky about the ram make sure you have memory certified to run on that motherboard.

Dude your post keeps confusing me also its really confusing me man. You had 2 sticks of memory at 512megs each = 1gb then you bought another 512megs? But if you take a old 512 meg memory module out and put the new 512 in it works? Did I get it right. If so that would lead me to believe supports full of it and it only runs 1gb of memory.

Wait a minute. You have 3 slots ech with 512mbs in them. Thats 1.5gbs there! Then you say you want to apply new memory 1024mbs. That would = 2.5gbs. How many ram slots do you have? 4? Just list what you had in there and what your trying to put in there. Example

OCZ 2X1 GBs in machine.
Bought OCZ 2X1 GBs not working in the machine.

That should help because you keep contradicting yourself man.

Sorry if confusing
3 slots in motherboard

Before upgrade:
2 X 512mb DDR3200 worked OK

After Upgrade
3 x 512Mb DDR3200 won't work

Remove Upgrade all OK

Motherboard manual says will support DDR3200 upto Max 1gb
Motherboard manual says will support DDR2700 upto Max 2gb

I don't think there is anything you can do to fix this. My motherboard is the same way, if I'm running pc3200 memory it will only allow 2 slots (512 max module size). But if I run something like pc2700 it will allow me to use all three memory slots.

Hmm thats a tricky one. I didn't know certain motherboards could run varied amounts of ram based off the speed. I think you may be outta luck. As tommyboy said you would be better off to RMA it and get a stick of pc2700. And yes 1536 should be faster than 1024 at 3200. Depends on the bandwith of the 3200 vs your current 2700 to determine which would really be faster though.

it kinda depends on what you are doing. If you don't really need lots of ram (like just ordinary web surfing etc, small games...) then the 1gb pc3200 would be faster. But if you are using some program/game that uses more than 1gb of ram (like bf2 for example) then having 1.5gb of pc2700 would probably be better.

And you could just always try it out. First go to the bios and set the ram speed to pc2700 (ddr333). Then it should work fine with the 3 ram sticks, since they would be running at pc2700 and it said that it supports 2gb at pc2700.

Here's your solution: Buy a new motherboard to get the most performance out of the hardware you purchased. Problem Solved.
