comp shuts down when usb stick inserted

Weird problem, my computer always reboots when a usb drive is inserted while in windows xp pro. Tried several different types of usb drives and still the same problem, anyone know whats wrong?

Make sure you have Service Pack 1 at least installed on your PC.

Ive got SP2 and all the latest updates

has this always happen? becuase it sounds like a short.

thats what i thought at first but it does it in the back ports as well. weird eh?

no it hasnt always happened, only for about the past 6 months or so

although now that i think about it i didnt get a usb drive till about 6 months ago so yea...


ive tried 4 different types of usb drives form different brand names

I would probably put your Windows CD back in the DVD drive and do a repair.

I recently did a complete format, about 1 month ago and it was doing it before that.

yeah TRD has it right.

i have seen this caused by a short in the usb hub. see if the sticks work in other comptuers, then if/when they do, try them in every port on your computer.
