Startup Procedure 680i mobo help

Do you have thermal paste with you right now? You should remove the existing thermal paste (rubbing alcohol works great) and put some new stuff on (just an amount the size of an uncooked grain of rice). I recommend doing this not only to try and fix your overheating issues but also now that you've removed the heatsink after the computer had been running.

also, depending on how long the computer stays one, check a bios update. get atleast the p23 version. I must stress the importance of making sure the computer can stay on for about 10 minutes so nothing currupts. this is probally more time than you'll need for that rig, but just to be safe.
