Hey guys.

I am at school, and I am trying to fix a teacher's computer.

It is a Dell Dimension 8400.

Here is the problem:

I turn on the PC, and it goes past the Windows XP screen with scrolling loading bar, and then you get a blue screen of death.

The blue screen of death message is as follows:
"UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
STOP: 0x000000ED (0x873D6A68, 0xC0000006, 0x00000000, 0x00000000"

So I tried to go to the Recovery Console with the XP cd in the CD-ROM drive, but it wouldn't let me go to it because it said:

"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer."

I ran the diagnostic on the HDD and it said failed and the return code was just "?"

There are files on the computer that are needed, and I need to get them back, and get the computer back running.

So... Help away :]

This is my teacher's dad's computer lol.

So as far as I know, he was using the computer and he pulled the power cable out of either the wall or the back of the case.

That is all I know. It is not an upgrade though.

I've had this problem a few times and what I did was buy a hard drive enclosure for about $30 and plugged the unbootable drive into it and accessed it from another computer...

sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't...
