Nice guide. Dunno if anyone is interested but I came across a nice Bittorrent settings guide here:

Thanks.

Yeah, I didn't really include any tweaking in this guide. Maybe eventually I'll write a 201 guide that goes more in-depth into that kind of stuff, but this was really meant for people who have never used BitTorrent and want to learn the basics of how it's used.

thats the very basic idea of what people need. good job on it freestyle :D

problem is that with this site this thread might be locked becuase it's dealing with torrnets.

but just to add on, in your next guide you should show port fowarding, uploading torrents, setting up tracking sites.

Its a nice basic guide, but like Ronco said, sit might be closed or possibly deleted due to content.

Altho, since you did mention the fact that it does have some legal uses (i'll use downloading Ad-aware for an example) i'm not sure if it can be closed on that fact.

i did know this, but i would be interested in learing about the port stuff.

yes that is true. most torrent sites are used for speedier downloading speeds for legal problems, there is that majority (me being one of them :D) who pirates stuff <3

lol i don't know about speedier.... all the downloads that i've done of legal things tend to be slower than the ones you can get from teh manufactuer, or download.com

Just thought I'd add some of my favourite torrent sites to the list.

Freestyler, that's a nice guide there. I use Utorrent (previously was using Azureus, but found it to be to resource intensive, plus took it's time in picking up seeders.) as well and just used one of the default speed settings (256k DSL in my case) and everything downloads fine at the right speed 25-30k.

I haven't had to forward any ports or anything, just allow all UDP and TCP in Outpost Firewall Pro. Not the most secure setup regarding torrents I know. But I haven't been caught out yet so it's good enough for me. Besides, if I ever do get caught out I'm sure Nod32, SpySweeper or Spyware Doctor will fix the problem(s) quick smart.

Yeah, well sometimes it's hard to find things on the net, and they can be found with BT. Also, if you try a lot of download sites, they are bottlenecked to a certain speed unless you pay for a subscription, but you can just download it with torrents.

And as for if it's illegal or not, depends on your ethics. Remember those commercials with the kid downloading a movie and it says something like would you steal a purse, would you steal a car, etc.? Then it says like an MPAA rating spoof:

Personally, I don't agree with that. I think that prices for many pieces of software are ridiculous (I'm looking at you Photoshop), and there's no reason to pay hundreds of dollars for it. Movies, well, it's seven bucks to get the movie ticket, are those millionaire+ Hollywood producers really going to die over it? Come on, let's be serious. If you really like it, I think you should go out and buy it though, just to show your support for it. I do the same with CDs and games if I think they are really worth my money. If not, then I'll just delete it.

I like all of those torrent sites that Toby posted as well.
