IF one drive fails than all is lost, but how often do drives fail? Or do they fail more often in raid setups? I'm kinda new to this area, so I ask, lol.

How often drives fail...

I'm sure each company hard drive maker, WD, seagate, MAxtor ect.. have their own records for this, i dont believe its been released to the public though.

Drives for the most part are well built and last a long time, WD and Seagate have great 5 year warranties.

one of my old Dells have a SCSI Maxtor drive that has been running for 10 years...

no drives do not fail more in RAID setups.

but they do fail, and when they do depending upon the Type of RAID you can be much better protected compared to a single desktop drive.

FOR EXAMPLE, RAID 1.

MIRRORING, you lose half of all diskspace. you need two drives.

for instance, 2 500 GIG hard drives, in RAID 1 will show up as a Single 500 GIg hard drive.

When data is written it is written completely to both drives.
