bad wifi performance in windows xp

Hi, I recently upgraded to windows vista from xp home sp2 and noticed the wifi performed much better, my speed improvement went from around 150kbps to 500kbps average download speed, unfortunately i had to go back to windows xp due to driver issues with other hardware and after a clean install I still have very slow wifi, since this is obviously a software or driver based issue, does anybody know of some good (preferably free of charge) software that would help improve my wireless speed?

Have you looked for a newer driver for your network adapter?

ive tried looking on broadcom.com for one and i can't seem to find one for my product, but the driver on my system is from way back in 2004, wow my computer isnt even that old no wonder im having problems
