 Whew, where to start? This is beginning to drive me crazy, close to throwing the comp out the window!!

First, typing this was a chore..I would type, nothing appears, then presto all appeared..

My computer has gotten extremely slow/sluggish.
I recently got the Verizon Fios, and while the test confirmed my dl/ul speed, going to pages is worse than dialup..

When I am on IE, I constantly get the "NOT RESPONDING" message..Then all of a sudden it comes back to life..
I get this "not responding" message with almost any application I try to open, then it works.

 Today I tried to rip some music off a cd, I inserted the cd into the drive..Nothing.
I selected MY COMPUTER> DVD Drive> Play.....The computer FROZE.
I went to windows task manager> select END PROGRAM.....The prgram shuts down, and EVERY ICON on my desktop disappears, I can sumon up the task manager, it says all the programs are running, BUT NOTHING APPEARS!!

I had to reboot in order to get to anything.. This happened several times before I gave up..

Even going from one user to another is eventful..Sometimes the same icon dissapearance occurs..

I have run PC-CILLIN, Adaware, spybot, spysweeper, Ewido, nothing was found..

I tried using my Roxio media program, THIS froze up as well..

I am running XP home
2003 Gateway 700X comp
Intel 2.66Ghz P4 processor
512mb RDRAM PC800 memory
128mb NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti4200G graphics card.

These are more the major problems.....
But the not responding, and slow IE are getting to me..

Shutting down is also a chore..Minimizing applications would freeze.
Going from one program to another would fail to respond..

SIGH

Any ideas?

Thanks..

Last.........

IF, IF, I were to clean out this computer, and give it to my son......To replace his older one......

ANY recommendations on a new computer? Make/model

Any recommendations on where to purchase?

I only need the computer.........I have a new 19" monitor, and a very good surround sound speaker system......

THanks for letting me vent!!!!!!!!!!!!!

seems like many problems with your windows install. not really worth fixing. just backup your important stuff and wipe your hard drive clean and reinstall windows. and if you were to buy a new computer, get yourself a mac :)

Thanks for the reply!!!

I have thought about a Mac, BUTTTT, are there any drawbacks to using them as opposed to a pC?

Especially, since everything I own is PC related?

They look nice, BUT, seriously, are there drawbacks to their use as compared to a PC?

Try some of the following:

- Defrag your hard drive (My Computer > Right-click the hard drive > Properties > Tools tab > Defragment Now). This takes a long time usually, so you might want to leave it on overnight.

- Update all your drivers (graphics, networking, etc.)

- You already scanned for viruses and adware, so that's good.

Post a Hijack This log just so we can make sure there's no spyware:
http://www.download.com/HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10379544.html

And if none of that really helps, you may just want to reformat Windows like Borat said.

I wouldn't get a Mac, IMO, they're too pricey. If money doesn't matter...sure. The nice thing about Macs though is that now you can actually install Windows on it, so you can still use all your Windows programs.

Everyone here is going to recommend that you build your own computer. You'll get a much cheaper price, and much better performance for the price. It's really not that hard, and we can guide you along the way. What would you budget be? And what would you be using it for?

the macs are pricey because
1. of their case
2. built in (good) cam and mic
3. remote
4. built in wireless (even on the desktops)
5. has good lcd built in

Um, but you could add all of that into a PC that you built for much less...
