Well at the moment G is the standard, but there is a new one, cant remember the letter...
The newest protocol is Wireless N, but since it is so new and not supported to it's max, it's simply referred to as Draft-N (meaning that there will be future revisions to the "N" protocol.
As for getting networking devices on a budget, this is something I would look into.
By the way, this D-Link wireless adapter is on sale now. I'm so upset about it because they were $19.99 a week ago when I got it for a gift to a friend (with rebate) and now they're $17.99 (with rebate). Well $2 difference is ok I guess. I also have this wireless adapter---too good:
D-Link DWL-G122 IEEE 802.11b/g USB 2.0 High Speed 2.4GHz Wireless Adapter up to 54Mbps Data Rates 64/128-bit WEP WPA—Wi-Fi Protected Access - Retail

Ok now this wireless router is on sale and damn, look at the huge rebate this sucker has!!!! People would be a fool not to jump on this deal!!!!! Oh, I also use to have this wireless router but messing with the firmware locked me out of it--other than that, it worked great:
D-Link DI-524 IEEE 802.3/3u, IEEE 802.11b/g High Speed Wireless Router - Retail

With everything combined, it's like $30 not including shipping and taxes. It's a great deal for a combo pack.
