with 4GB you should be fine for a while...and if i remember hearing correctly...some OSs' can not utilize more than 2GB...

but again that may have been a little while ago...or I could be making that up but I think i remember hearing that somewhere...

I think 4gb is overkill, 2gb should make you more than happy with todays applications, maybe in the future programs will use more memory, but by then you can upgrade ram or may be getting an entirely new pc by then so I would go with 2gb

Woooo, $3000 budget!!!!!! You can get a darn nice PC for that price. Here's a partial list of what's good to get:

For the video card, get this.

for vista I think 4gb isn't an overkill. 2gb would definitely be enough, but in a while when games become more demanding (and since from what I've heard vista is a huge resource hog) so 4gb would be good in the future. I'm currently running 2gb and with win xp I think I don't need to get more ram in a while.

But I wouldn't get more than 4gb.

and kjman87, I think you are correct about the OS supporting the amount of ram. Now I'm not sure about this, but I think win xp won't recognize more than 2gb. (or was it 3gb?)

well im not wanting to spend that much thats just my max, im trying to stick around $1500-$2000, and thats what im at right now, later ill post all of the specs of the components im using and ask you guys what you think of it

Oh, then what you have is fine. I would say get 2GB minimum too for Vista Ultimate because that's what I'm going to get too. Im' also building a new PC when I do get the new OS.

yeah i think i will start with a 2 gig ram, the ram im getting is a 2 gig chip so if i decide to upgrade to 3 or 4 it will be possible. what can you guys say about a nVidia Geforce 7950 GT for a graphic card becuase thats what i was thinking about geting

well depends. If you are going to be gaming with vista you will want a dx10 vid card. So a 8800GTS would be ideal. But then again it's quite expensive.
You could just get a 7800GT or something like that for now, and then get a dx10 card when some cheaper ones will be released. Though you have a pretty high budged so you could probably fit that 8800GTS in there.

You can get a 8800GTS for $400 + shipping.
