motherboard question

hi all,

a friend of mine screwed up the motherboard on his system (compaq 6326se) by installing the wrong kind of memory. It apparently sparked and one of the chips beside the ram sockets looks to be burned. I am trying to get a new board for him so he can have his system up and running and I need some help

ok now for the question...the motherboard states that it has an "mPGA478" socket for the processor...is that the same as a normal 478 socket?

for example could I install this board and and use the same processor:

^description says P4 Prescott processor...original board says Willamette, Northwood

any help would be greatly appreciated

How did it spark? Did he have it turned on when he installed the RAM? Im guessing its probably the same socket, if ya unsure then just contact compaq by email for confirmation

mPGA is just another big word for Socket. It's Socket 478 and yes, the board you've pointed will work.

Although, I wonder did he install the RAM. If it was the opposite side and it sparked, chances can be that the RAM is gone.

I have no idea what he did but doesn't RAM only go in one way? I think the original stick of RAM is fine because when I turn the computer on it goes to the XP screen (with the loading bar) and just before it shows the log on it restarts by itself. Same thing happens when I try to boot into safe mode.

I tried to stick another HD in there just in case a clean OS install would help but I get the same restarting problem when the recover disc boots.

Wow i'm surprised the machine still turns on.

If i read that correctly it does still turn on right?

i just reboots.

I would be careful here, Your memory could still be faulty.

I would put it into another system and try it out, run if for a few hours ect...

Yes it actually does turn on...I'll give your idea a try and see what happens...Thanks
