overwhelmed with certifications

hey...
i'm looking to get a job in computers. i did 2 semesters of JAVA in college, but other than that i haven't really gotten much exposure. it seems like the surest route to obtaining a job is through certifications. through the research that i've done, i've slimmed the list down to microsoft certs. it seems like .NET and C# are the hot technologies out right now and am leaning towards the MCTS certs (microsoft certified technology specialist) in either distributed, windows or web applications. my questions are the following:

1) is choosing the MCTS cert a good place to start my comp career? does it allow me the flexibility to move to other technologies while providing job security and good pay?

2) if i get an MCTS cert, can i immediately get a job or do i need to obtain a package of certs before i can find something?

3) is there perhaps an easier way to get into computers? one of my main concerns is that it will be difficult to sustain the level of committment required to obtain a cert. having a job would that dealt with computers would facilitate this process immensely.

any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advanced.

I would start out with A+ certification first then move on to more advanced certifications...

Yeah. Get A+, and make sure you take the Hardware/Software version.

I made the mistake of taking the new version and missed passing it by 1 question. They ask questions about OSHA standards and other corny crap that really has nothing to do with what the certification should be about.

I would then proceed to take the Network+, then your MCP (Microsoft Certified Professional), and then possibly Security+. MCSA (Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator/Analyst or whatever) would be a good cert to take as well.

Really, those would be all you would need. Anything more advanced such as Cisco and MCSE is really pointless in taking....it's a lot of money, and not to mention, if you already have a college degree, really all you need are the basic certs to land a darn good job.

if i get an A+ certification, is that enough to get me a job? if not, what cert on top of that would most likely guarantee a position?

Chainer, the certifications that you mention seem like they are good for IT. What about the MCTS that I mentioned? Is attempting to learn .NET and C# not worth it or too difficult?

It all depends on the route you plan on going. Start with A+ and then N+, and take it from there once you know exactly what ya wanna do. Any cert will get you a job, as long as your actively looking and ya sell yourself. Dont expect to walk into a high paid job tho with A+, its a starter course and there are tons of people with it now.
