My router theory

I have an old dell desktop at home which I want to use to connect to sky broadband (in the UK). This connection service includes a router which has to be used, but I have already discovered that the old computer won't support a router as it does not have a local area connection capability under network drives. My theory is that it has to have a network card installed. Am I on the right lines?

The Sky broadband connection insists on the router being used. The router is to distribute the connection to the other machines around the house.

Yeah, I think Sky Broadband is hardwired to the MAC of the router they give you...

NICs are literally a couple of quid in PC World. Honestly, the cheapest I saw was about £3.50.
