GPU not recognized

No, I don't think that is the case. I'm seeing half the available 512MB come and go under the same circumstances.. it occurred with nothing but an Everest window and the current background desktop (Bliss)

I also believe the Ram allocation for integrated grafix does not change, because it is just that- an allocation, set aside, thereby not able to cause fluctuating Physical Memory. Further, I believe that the allocation is 64MB.. Do the math- 512 minus 64 = 448mB. Everest has always indicated 447MB or 448MB until last night when I started having tasks end without warning and I started to see occassional dips to ~197MB RAM under the same modest demand levels.

I am ready (and pratically dying) to upgrade RAM to 1GB, but I'm hesistant to make additional investment in the system until I know the GPU can be made operable. Any replacement computer I go to will likely use different CPU, RAM type, GPU, etc.
Don't want to throw away good money after bad..

Do you have an open PCI/AGP/PCIX slot?

i would look into getting a vid card, it will help you out in more ways than one.

Freeing up ram, better graphics ect...

didn't you even read the thread title?
or my post?

this is ridiculous

Sorry Bro..

It musta been a long day my head was somewere else,

I will double check your post tommrow mornign and see if i can come up with somthing, i need to sleep.

EDIT: EDIT: EDIT:

Alright I may have figured something out.

Your card my have Hypermemory. A card like this will have say 256Mb of dedicated memory but Can Use *say* another 256MB of SYSTEM memory.

here is a link to a X1300 that has Hypermemory

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16814103012

(here is a more though explanation)

*HYPERMEMORY AND TURBOCACHE

With the advent of PCI Express, ATI and nVidia have developed technologies that allow the use of system memory as a buffer for graphics data, basically extending the memory of the dedicated GPU itself into system memory. The nice thing is that this can offer a healthy and very inexpensive performance boost for chips that would otherwise be painfully crippled.

The problem is that system memory is almost always slower than dedicated GPU memory, so it's no substitute for having dedicated memory.

Worse still, low-end parts that use this technology are frequently marketed in a misleading fashion. For example, newer Sony S-series notebooks use GeForce Go 6200s that list as having 128MB of video memory when in fact they only have 32; that 96 is shared. Likewise, there's been a lot of confusion regarding the amount of actual memory on the ATI X300s used in Dell notebooks.

It's my understanding that the major culprits of this are the GeForce Go 6200, 6400, and the X300. But while the X300 may be marketed as having HyperMemory, the GeForce Go parts tend to gloss over their use of TurboCache.

One great thing about HyperMemory over TurboCache is that it's almost entirely software, so most ATI cards, with some tweaking, can use it, though the performance improvement is largely minor.*

junked it!

(please read last portion at least)

hey, no sweat man

I was getting pretty frustrated.. I am a patient person, but I had my problem posted on five different forum boards for days.. and I must say that many of the participants are dumbasses.. on one such board my post sat unreplied to for quite a while and was way down the list.. I was cool and willing to wait, so I didn't bump it.. a handful of 'looky loos' viewed it and even viewed the attachment (an Everest report).. why look at the attachment if you're not going to reply?? Whilst all this is going on I see frivolous threads pop up with a title like: URGENT, HELP Needed in picking CELLPHONE
How phu$&in' urgent can that be??
and the guy got quick replies! Good grief.. MY problem really WAS urgent.. this is not some computer in some kid's bedroom used primarily for games and surfing porn.. this is in my office at my shop and my livelihood depends on it.

so again, I apologize to you for jumping on your ship, man

I replaced the mobo and power supply and all is well now. This is the bad ending of my last transaction with TriTek Computers in Houston, Texas. I bought this POS from the guy less than four months ago. I like to give the 'little guy' my business whenever I can, you know? The system was sold to me with the claim that it was all brand new parts. The HD that it came with had a TriTek sticker on it and was hand-written "warranty expires 1/2004"!!
Can you belive it? That is the reason that now I will be sueing for my money to be refunded.. not because of the cheesy jetway mobo, or the cheesy power supply he used, but because of the deception and lie. I am a very easy guy to deal with, but if you cheat me look out!
I am going to fry this jackass' bacon big time.
Along with the civil suit, this idiot can look forward to being contacted by the Attorney General of the State of Texas who I am advising of this deceptive sale. The Comptroller of Public Accounts will also, I'm sure, want to talk to him about all the state and county sales tax that he doesn't collect... whenever you buy something from TriTek they say "If you pay me cash you won't have to pay sales tax" they say this to total strangers walking in off the street!

-RANT OVER-
since I will be returning the original system after I get my money back can you recommend a good, thorough, and cheap or even free utility that I can use to wipe the HD?

Thanks,
Mike
