On my brothers computer they tried to install windows onto a broken hard drive which we put in my brothers computer, now we've taken the broken hard drive out, but when they try to start theres up they have 3 windows startup up options (all Proffessional) and if you dont click down arrow and enter streight away the computer crashes, any suggestions ?
Thanks in advance :)

Well, try booting with the one that works. let's say it's the first choice. Then, go to Folder options and uncheck Hide system files and select View hidden files.

Then, go to C:\boot.ini.

Then, the first one in the list is the first OS in the list. if it's this one that worked, then, delete the two other entries. Save the file and reboot. It should work.

Have you unchecked the "Hide system files (recommended)" box? Have you selected "View Hidden Folders" option?

Theres no need to alter boot.ini file directly in XP. Goto system > advanced > startup and recovery. Move the position of the OS that boots to the top, by highlighting it then selecting move up, if ya move it to the top then this will be the one that automatically boots first
