How do I hook my laptop up to my HDTV?

How do I hook my laptop up to my HDTV? I can do it over S-video, but I want to do it over VGA so I can get the full 1920x1080 resolution. When I try it the TV says "Unsupported signal. Please adjust your PC output." What does that mean??

The TV is a Sony SXRD.

Have ya checked in ya graphics card settings for a TV setting? Just enable that if ya havent done so already
