Ram Decisions? PLease I need Advice

Ok so heres the story. First off this is what I got

AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Dual Core
PNY 7600gt
1gb of Corsair Ram
M2n4 SLi Motherboard
550watt PSU

So theres this kid at my school whos got 2x256 ram that wont fit on his board cause hes got all the slots full. He says I can have it for free. He has no idea what type of timings it has or anything, or anything else about it. Would my computer benefit from having the extra ram even if its timings and speed are bad and they slow down my other ram?

Or should I stick with what I got?

Your ram will only work as fast as the slowest module, so if that ram is slower then ya pc is gonna run slower. Get it and try it anyway, and if its no good then sell it

It depends on how much slower this other ram is compared to your corsair. It's hard to say at this point. All I can suggest you do is try it and see if there is any benefit. I mean, it's free, so what do you have to lose?

the timings are not so important, but if it has a slower clock speed then it's most likely better not to use it. But as distortion said, try it. U don't have anything to lose!
