There are many distributions of GNU/Linux such as Suse, Ubuntu and Fedora Core. Personally, I would recommend new GNU/Linux users to start off with the LiveCDs. A LiveCD will allow you to run the OS off the cd without any installation. Knoppix would be a good option. (www.knoppix.org)

Well, www.linuxiso.org is one of the best.
Also, look for Linux in www.isohnt.com and download Azureus. The downloads may be more reliable and faster.

If you are new to Linux, grab Suse, Kubuntu or Mandriva. Easy to install and configure.

Any KDE interface is better. Remember:

sudo sh

is a very important command to use when installing applications in .bin, .sh or any files. Always use XTerm.

sudo is root install granted. So, you will need to use the root password.
