Points to Address:

* Breed-specific laws are not the best way to protect communities. An owner intent on using his or her dogs for malicious purposes will simply be able to switch to another type of dog and continue to jeopardize public safety. The list of regulated breeds or types could grow every year without ever addressing responsible dog ownership. Deeds, not breeds, should be addressed.

* When properly enforced, California's existing dangerous dog law forces all dog owners to be responsible regardless of the breed they own. Clear guidelines for identifying and managing dangerous dogs will promote responsible dog ownership and prevent tragedies from occurring. Simply placing restrictions on certain breeds will not improve public safety - it will only punish responsible dog owners.

* Breed-specific laws are hard to enforce. Breed identification requires expert knowledge of the individual breeds, placing great burden on local officials.

* Breed-specific laws are unfair to responsible owners.

* Breed-specific laws increase costs for the community. Shelter costs for the community could rise as citizens abandon targeted breeds and adoptable dogs of the targeted breeds could be euthanized at the shelter.

* Some communities have had their breed-specific laws overturned on constitutional grounds. Because proper identification of what dogs would be included is difficult or impossible, the law may be deemed unconstitutionally vague.

* Strongly enforced animal control laws (such as leash laws), generic guidelines on dealing with dangerous dogs and increased public education efforts to promote responsible dog ownership are all better ways to protect communities from dangerous animals.

* Breed-specific legislation is opposed by the AKC, the American Veterinary Medical Association, the National Animal Control Association, the ASPCA, and a host of national animal welfare organizations that have studied the issue and recognize that targeting breeds simply does not work.

HOW CAN THIS BE JUSTIFIED? i, personally, have worked with both american pit bulls and dobermans at the animal sanctuary, and the dogs we have had in of those breeds have NEVER bitten me. i have been bitten and attacked more by a CHICKEN than by a pit bull. vicious breed? absolute rubbish.

I think it depends on how the owner treats the dog. Any breed of dog can be nice or mean depending on how the owner treats it. I've seen rotweilers, dobermans, pitbulls etc. that were nice because the owners were nice to them, i've also seen the opposite of that.

Well, there is the Human part, and that is it mostly. However certain dogs were raised for a reason.

Look at a German Shepard. My dad trained them when he was in the Militiary. He said he had never seen another dog as viscious as that breed.

But then again, you can train anydog to be mean.. But this peticular breed (German Shepards) were raised for a reason. - To attack. Why do you think the Military us(ed) them. And the Police Force still does.

Hell, I dont care how nice the German Shepard is, they can still be violent if cornered or something of the sort - its in their blood (metaphoricly speaking). I wont let my Old English Sheepdog play with any German Shepard. Just because the dogs can snap (and also when I was young my dog and I were attcked by them). And the dog at that time was an Old Englsih Sheepdog - I guess I developed part of a fear.

My point being (sorry Iwent off on that dog during a pitbull thread) that any dog can be mean, and others can just snap into that mindset. I know a boxer can, as well as a blueheeler.

Im not sure why these pitbulls were bred and raised for, but in their defence I can say I have never met a mean, or even semi mean pitbull. But this is another one of those dogs I wouldnt let my dog play with. (he only plays with labs, golden retreivers, spinger spaniels and all those laied back dogs)

I've continued this old thread because of two tragedies that have happened in England very recently, yesterday a 15 month-old baby was very badly bitten by a rottweiler, deep bites all over, not life threatening, but she'll be scarred for life, but by far the worst happened the day before, when a five month-old baby was dragged outside & savaged to death by two rottweilers, literally torn limb from limb, neither attacks were provoked, they weren't guard dogs, bought as puppies as family pets, come on all you do-gooders, NOW justify the existance of dangerous dogs such as these, if you can!!!

I have to agree. Why would anyone have a vicious dog as a pet.

the second involving the 2 year old, (now in intensive care) the dog was a pet... (again rotweiler).

IMO, I can't see why people would want these dogs as pets. but realistically I have a friend with a german sheppard...
these are typically used as attack dogs, an the british police force uses them for chasing people down...
should these be classified as dangerous animals to keep in a house? my friends dog is the nicest well tempered dog you could possibly wish to meet...

Also you have to realise that even animals such as cats are prone to causing damage to young infants, there have been several cases where cats scratch or bit babies and it scars them for a very long time, if not permenantly.

the justification for dangerous dogs, is that with the right keeping an temproment the dogs can be very peacefull, much like the people I kno that keep what is effectivly an attack dog as a pet.

on the other hand, even dogs considered as not dangerous, (cockerspaniels or even cats) can actually inflict quite serious wounds on people...

it's alla amatter of keeping and perspective...

I see your point, but whether they are guard dogs or not, they should never be owned by people with babies, small children or elderly relatives, there was a case once of a woman in her eighties that was bitten so badly on the leg by a rottweiler, that her lower leg had to be amputated, she was manipulating her wheelchair around her daughter-in-law's house, when she bumped the dog, she died three months later in hospital from shock.
