So, I have been given the task bringing up a building to the 21st century. This involves a completly new network and a few new PC's. I got most of my idea's down except a few.

What we will be buying is a new 24 port smart switch, 2 wireless access points, 250+ gig network attatched storage (SMB with NTSF file permissions), New router / firewall, print server, 3X laptops, 3X projectors, 3X wall mount 100" screens, 1X rollup 100" screen, 2X desktop PC's 5X microsoft office license and USB drives gallore.

What I am really stuck on is the network attatched storage. I need a standalone unit with support for SMB protocol and it must support NTSF file permissions. I was almost thinking the maxtor NAS units.

Another thing I am stuck on is the router / firewall, I want to aim at around $300 level, which isnt enough to buy me a Cisco PIX. I dont want home level routers, and I want them to be able to meet NSA security standards.

Third thing I also need is a print server that handles 3+ printers. I believe 2 outta 3 printers are paralell. I may need invididual print servers.

I will post a list of what I have decided for some products already.

Okay so first off I got the laptop's and desktop's down. Dual core based desktop's with 2 gig of ram and some laptops (not sure about them yet). I got this stuff covered easy.

For the switch I decided to get a netgear FS726T.

For the wireless access points, I am going to go with Linksys WRT54GL's running DD-WRT with power injectors

Power Injector(s): http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1533887&CatId=203

EDIT: Thinking possibly this for the router, runs a pretty propertiary OS however. http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=614559&CatId=0

Arnt switches different than routers? Thats what ive heard :\

Yes they are different, what does this have to do with the thread? Switches (usually) work at level 2, routers work at level 3. Switches pass broadcasts, routers dont pass broadcasts. Thats whats different.

In this configuration I am using both a switch and a router.

Im not good with networking but that looks good :)

this is the best i could find thats not dlink and netgear.

sorry i forgot to post a link... :( now i lost it

If you are aiming cheap with the F/W solution, then I suggest you go with a PC firewall solution running something like Linux and Shorewall

1-Well all network HDDs are to be configured via a PC or the master one (I think it's how it works)
And if you need a quality Hard drive, I would aim for better by buying a Fujitsu.

2-How about aiming for Netgear or 3Com?
