PC gamepads?

I've been looking around and have found only vague answers so I was hoping you guys could help me out on this one. I have a wireless Xbox 360 controller with the add-on USB cable and was wondering if there was someone who has written some software to use it on a XP-based PC. I've looked around and found nothing. The Windows drivers for the wired ones do not work on this one. I know the wired ones work, so why not the wireless ones?

If it doesn't work, then I'm also looking for some feedback on other possible alternatives. I'm looking primarily for something with a thumbstick instead of a d-pad in the main thumb position, and I also want it to be affordable. Hopefully around $20, I'm not willing to spend much more than $30. Can anyone give me some advice?

one solution is just to buy a wired xbox 360 controller for use with your pc.

Yes but it's $40 and I have no need for another Xbox controller. I thought about it, but it's too expensive for a broke college student like me.

I have the X-Box 360 controller for my pc but I think I got mad at nfs mw and its a little messed up lolz
