Parent in trouble

Hello all,

I've come to find myself is a desperate situation that has led me to take such drastic actions in order to find some sense of order in my parental life. My son, age 17, is at a certain point in his life where independent thought and expression hold greater priority than safety and well-being. Lately, all he does is spend hours on his laptop without moving a muscle, then abruptly leaving the house to what he tells me is his "friend's" house. I haven't met this friend, despite my pleas to invite him to dinner or some sort of gathering. I feel like i'm being duped for a fool while he goes off doing whatever it is that he does. He hasn't been the most honored of children. Indeed, trouble seems to follow him regardless of what happens. I have tried talking, taking action as a parent to no avail. I have tried to access his laptop to try and see what's going on but its protected with a password. As a parent, I want to be able to trust my own flesh and blood but I am fearful that something might be going on that could lead to a dangerous situation. All I know is that he uses the laptop to converse with friends using some kind of messaging software. I, myself, use MSN but it did not appear to be the case the few times i've been able to get a glimps.

I hate to ask but I need someone with more technical knowledge on the subject then myself to offer a resolution. Before I force the issue, which I know will only lead to deception and lies, I want to be able to really see what is going on. Are there any programs that can record such information like conversation text and webpages visited...ect that I can install via e-mail or something similar? I feel bad as it is having to resort to such extreme measures but I feel like I have no where else to turn. Thank you.

The password, you mean? It just shows a date. I don't know how relevant that information would be...

yeah sorry, im just trying to act like i sorta know what im doing....it obviousley is relevant if its the hint, an example of it could be the day him and his girlfriend got together or something of that matter

I'm not sure for consumers, but there are some commercial software for businesses and enterprises that can log and track whatever other computers do on the network. Mainly to ensure productivity isn't wasted watching porn or downloading stuff, but quite a lot of companies use them.

You could always use safe mode and delete the password and then you could access his account, the only downside is the deleting password part of it....

...Could you not take away his laptop for a time? Maybe take it to a specialty shop, and see what they can do while still working in the area that that law allows.

I'm going to give you the benifit of the doubt, this would be closed by now, but your story seems to be true..Sorry, but we get people here all the time, that want to hack into peoples computers and what not, and make a bs story...Why dont you just take the laptop away from him...Or if I were you, just be like "hey, can you show me how to do something on the computer" and then just try to watch him as he enters the password. If he says, "look away" then he is hiding something defintly, if he just casually pops it in, then your lucky..Wish you the best.

He's not "definitely" hiding something if he tells you to look away. I never let people see me enter my password and I really don't have anything to hide. Although, in this situation, you're probably right. I'm just saying that is not always the case.

Yeah I know, but I was just saying, well thats his son you know, shouldnt be saying look away to ur dad...Atleast I dont, I just type it real fast, but then again, I dont even have a password on my computer.. :p The only people I tell too look away are my friieds, they tend to joke around, and try to see what my email/aim password is.
