How do you make those cool wallpapers?

I've been looking on deviant art and there are tons of awsome 3D wallpapers/ earth wallpapers that look so amazing i'm wondering how you make those? What programs do you use? Are there any free programs avaliable that do that?

Terragen can make some pretty cool ones, I wouldn't say wallpaper material , but cool nonetheless.
