I am assuming that this is because you feel that his example does portray untidiness, and what you are trying avoid, and yes in a way it does prove your point, that there would be some people who would abuse it. However it is the minority as opposed to the majority that would abuse it, and in my mind would no more difficult to moderate then the 5 line signature rule.

As for custom signatures, I think we should start loosening the rules a bit on the signatures. You can still have certain regulations, but at least let us have some flexibility as to customize it a bit. Maybe more lines and smaller font, so it won't look humongous. Allowing images like custom userbars or something would be cool. I'm sure the moderators can change any thing, so if someone puts porn or some offensive material, take it off.
Nate's suggestion was a bit over the top, but allowing more lines and decreasing the font can still make the place look nicer. Something like this:

as for the other parts of your post:
builds section - weve already got enough sections, and this fits nicley into the general computer software/hardware section..
custom avatars... aint gonna happen. no matter how many threads are made on it.
custom sigs... aint gonna happen, look tacky IMO, its much better with just text..
custom user titles.. personally, i dont think this would work.. the titles weve got at the moment are fine, mabye another one after guru, but its better to have it all uniform.. IMO.

1stly... avatars... unfortunatly it looks like it aint going to happen... regardless of whether they are approved by the mods or not... it's a mod only function, so it means David would be the only one allowed to upload avatars on members behlaf...
and whilst it is a reasonably quick task to change a users avatar, it won't be a quick task if there are a lot of requests.
2ndly, Builds section... as Mark said, it's alerady implemented, (more or less), in the general section...
but I also agree with the theme of what Nate is saying... it would be good if there were a place that we could put tuorials that members write...
however, the best idea that I have at the moment is a general thread in that section called tutorials.
the thread wuold be locked... and if you had a tutorial you could send that to a moderator.
frankly that the only way that I can think of for a usefull tutorials secion to be implemented. there are already a lot of tutorial threads. and they eventually get pushed out of the forum system further and further down the pages
3rdly... Custom sigs... I don't see the ponit of turning on bbcde for sigs... fair enough we could get more creative... but it cuold also lead to the privellage being taken too far...
as it stands we already have some members who don't keep to the fiev line rules... a lot of new members don't even know that it's there.
I do however agree with the ide of reducing the size and increasing the amount of lines, (but not increasing the amount of lines if the font size isn't reduced)...
taking marks sig as an example...
the template could be change to read something like this
and we could up the line amount to 7 or 8 lines because of the reduced size.
User titles...
I agree that these could use something of a kick in the backside... I think there are more active Gurus than anyother member...
I'm sure i've said before that when I first joined there was only one guru (LK). now we have hand fulls of them... it's be nice if there were some higher level. especially now that we have more than one user breaking 10,000 posts.
I also think that the suggestion of custom text is a good one... cause it would let us recognise our more helpfull members... but I know that it would be awkward to set up.

I mean...David, It's a forum. Not your house. You don't have anyone to impress with this forum. I'll admit...it does look tidy...but it would be great for this community to have a little...for lack of a better word...benefits?
