ok so my laptop 2 floors above all the networking gear but, for a whole it seemed fine a little slow because of interference and stuff like that but now When i go on my laptop which has windows Xp Professional i go to View avilable wireless networks, the network here in the house wont show up I cant see it, Even if I am right next to the Wireless Access point it still doesnt show up. I have tried every thing.
I have unplugged every thing( the modem, the router and the wap) but i still cant see hte network that i am trying to connect to. My mom and dads pcs have internet if i plug into the modem via the cbale that goes into the ethernet port in the back of my moms pc then i get internet fine (100MPBS). but the dang wireless is just retardo. Also one of the Antennas on top of the wap is lose like It twists around but yet the other one doesnt....

Could be as simple as the channels are mismatched. Go in to the wireless router settings or access point as you stated and check what channel it's on. Match the channel in your laptop. If still no joy them set both for adhoc and see if you get in. From there you know it's not a hardware issue. Now this mode is not in the slightest secure. Set up a secure connection using WAP or like me just put in the MAC numbers from your laptop into the wireless router/access point.
It's always something simple. You just have to start with the simple stuff and work from there.

for our wap we put in the mac addresses of the 3 computers in the house and only those 3 pcs can acces them

Go into the device manager and uninstall your wireless access card. (If its not plug and play make sure you have the drivers for it), reinstall it. Also, do you have a cordless phone in the same room as the router? No matter what the frequency of the cordless phone it can mask the wirless signal if the cordless phone is emitting a strong enough signal. Usually it wont mask the signal completly but it's something to look into.

Also your setup seems weird? Most cable modems allow one pc to hook up to it. So the setup you should have is both computers attached to the router, and the router attached to the modem.

If all else fails, attach the labtop to the router using an ethernet cable so you can get internet, contact support, and often you can allow them to take over your computer and they'll configure it for you.

Nate, MAC address filtering allows certain computers to connect to the network, but if you can't pick up a wireless signal that won't do much. Also MAC address filtering should always be used in combination with a WEP key, because MAC address filtering on it's own is not an extremly effective measurment of security.

Of course most people won't bother finding a security flaw in MAC filtering and move on to takign over someone elses network, it's still not entirely secure.

I just had another idea. Have you ever been able to wirelessly connect to the internet? Double check all of your mac addresses, perhaps you incorrectly entered in the wrong MAC address for your labtop. that would explain why you cant connect to the interweb :p.

Also, this should be in the networking/dns section.

Ive been able to connect to it before.
their are cordless phones in the same room as the Wap right next to it lol
um i think on the network its my mums pc into the modem and my dads into the router sorry lol
