Replacing the Why thread

Tommy has asked me to close the Why thread.

so I've moved it away from here...
it's stretched over some 7 pages and has completly changed from what it was started for... and towards the end it was just getting a little silly (more my fault than anything I know).

so I thought it'd be better to make a new thread where we could continue to discuss custom avatars and the possibilities of getting/implementing custom avatars.

so suggestions on a post card... (or at least this thread).

here are the main points brought up in the last thread that deserve to be re-itterated again here...

there are over fourteen thousand members on the member list (I know that they are not all active).
there are only 58 avatars to go around, this is very very limited, (especailly considering the size of the user base.

Unfortunatly a long time ago custom avatars were trialled and abused.
I have no idea how they were abused. you'd have to ask someone who was here a long time before I was. (like David).

because the custom avatars were abused before it's very very unlikely that they will be trialed again, (in fact I've been here over two years, and people have been asking for that long and it's not been turned on again yet).

I believe that members do deserve either more stock avatars or the ability to get a custom avatar in some way, we have a lot of very helpful members around here. and in the absense of secondary user titles I think it'd be nice to combine the two ideas. so we could have a graphical representation that you are a photoshop/windows/graphics card genius. -people who help this forum with their insightfullness are keeping this place going constantly answering peoples questions on computer hardware and software, -you know who you are and you know that you deserve recognition.

the idea that moderators can upload custom avatars on members behalf still stands. it's just awaiting discussion/approval.

and the table is still very much open for other suggestions for what can be done to allow users to get their own avatars.

sooooo.... keep discussing...

The only thing that makes me mad, is I dont mind if he doesnt give us custom sigs, but why do we have such a limited amount to pick from...Ok, Ill make us a nice jumbo pack, resized and all, with around 100 avatars, will you upload them David?

^ i think dev's idea is quite good, having more avatars to choose from would be good, but i dont think customs would work on here.. its been tried before, and failed.

Yeah, we dont have to have custom, as long as we have a good amount to pick from ( just my opinion)..And if you have one that you would really want, then you could just give it to me on aim, and ill throw it in...Basically this is what Ill do, take every picture, thats good, either that I pick, or you recomend, make a folder with watver amound 100-200, and then Ill use Photoshop cs2 batch option, and resize them all...If David says yes, ill get on it, and have them done by monday at the latest...Sorry kind of busy, pops needs me to help him do some stuff...Well thats just my 2 cents.

It would look as bad/good as it does now, everyone has different avatars, different colours, etc, so why would choosing our own, make any difference?

Because this way, people wont post porn, or images that arent/shouldnt be allowed on a forumm

Can I get a yes or no atleast, so I could start doing it..

I think we shoud allow memebers with 50 or 100 posts to use a custom avatar. They will not likely abuse it.

Custom Avatars: My Take

If you desire to use a custom avatar there should be a process in place where your desired avatar is submitted to Mods/Admin for scrutiny, if they are deemed unacceptable (due to size, content, whatever) they are rejected. If they are deemed acceptable the Mods/Admin would upload them to your profile.

This will increase Mod/Admin workload to a degree but would also negate the uploading of oversize/offensive avatars.

Personally my preferred avatar is an animated .gif of my country's national flag.

My $0.02

I completely agree with the sig rule.

However, custom avatars (and even when this small) no matter what it is, doesnt screw up the place toooo much. I mean sure, you have a sketchy one here and there, but thats nothing compared to some forums I go to. We are all (or shold be) mature enough to handle all kinds of avatars. And even if there is a problem the mods can change the avatars of the members. I mean thats what we are here for.

http://www.caraudio.com/forum/showthread.php?t=46794

Look there. Perfect example.

Its a stuck hot check thread. Long sigs big and custom avatars. One avatar has the picture of a thong in it.

And you get various idiot replies, but look how big the forum is (like 27K people) so your bound for them. And it keeps inline there. So with this smaller place, and tougher rules and mods that watch anyones, custom avatars could work. Remember we can change them.
