Fast processor and good memory but slow login procedure

I have a 1.6Ghz, 1GB memory and half my hard drive is full of 40GB

Since my school installed the network onto my laptop, I've experienced very slow boot ups from login (once I login and it says applying computer and personal settings). I sit there for about 1 minute and I cant think what could be slowing it down.

My girlfriend has a similarly powerful laptop and her's logins in quickly. Fine she hasnt got norton or zonealarm but surely my memory (and tests show) can hold out?

Is this when you are booting up at school? If it is, its because they are using whats know as an Active Directory (i think), and it loads all of your stuff from the server.

Is there something that can be done to prevent this slow down? I deliberately upgraded my memory to combat my battle with running zonealarm (vsmon.exe using up to 32MB) and have a speedy bootup while logging in.

Ive used various Tweak XP tricks but I have learnt that 'fancy' registry adjustments do nothing.
