Formatting an external

I have an external that needs to be formatted NTFS, it's USB, word.

Why would it be in the cp?

If you mean 'My Computer' It doesn't show up there

sorry,,,yes, i meant "my computer"....when i turn on my external usb drive it shows up there.

I haven't tried this on an external drive before but I assume it would work... When I need to format a hard drive, I use a program called Partition Logic, it's free and it does a good job. You need to burn it to an ISO image on a CD though and then just boot from the CD and it will come up with a GUI. It's pretty simple to use and I like it. I got it figured out. Even though it wasn't showing up in My Computer, of course because it isn't formatted.

Go into "Administrative tools" and then "Computer management" and choose "Disk Management".

Find the USB drive, right click on it and say "Format".

I just had to delete the partition that got mucked up

Right click my Computer, select Manage and then Disk management. It should be there. Format it from there.
