ide and sata

do you think the problem could be the stat cable and not my hd or my mb? i filled out an rma to new egg and i have 14 days to reconsider. so im open to testing

It's just a bad experience. I had a friend who was completely and anally against AMD in every sense.. all because his CPU fried. (Though admittingly, he did a piss-poor job putting it together.. the CPU and Heatsink didn't have contact, let alone a thermal compound.)

It is possible it could be the cable, can you try another one?
Thats worth a shot.

When I was putting a system together for a friend, I put XP on the SATA drive. I had to use a floppy disk during the installation to get it working. Afterwards when I put an IDE hdd in, I had to force the system to boot to the SATA before attempting the IDE; simply done by setting the boot priority in the bios.

Sata is def is reliable format. Ide is good as well, just slower. You shouldn't have any problems running the two together as long as you tell the computer which one to boot from. Do that by going into the BIOS.
