is my dvd dead

my dvd drive will not read any type of disks. the drive makes a sluggish whirling sound but doesn't kick into full gear. the device manger doesn't show any problems, i uninstalled the driver and reinstallled them but no luck. any idea what to try next to be sure its dead before i replace it???

I would say its dead, it sounds like the motor that spins the disc has bust.

I think he myt mean the sound of the disc spinning up, how many times do you hear the sound? Also have you used a lense cleaner?. If you have i wouldnt bother with it.
