the point is that everyone can do their bit...
in america there is *apparantly* more electricity used powering the little clocks on microwaves in a year than the entier of some african countires use in a year!
putting your TV on standby rather than off wastes money, the same for your monitor and indeed turning off your PC at might can save nearly a tonne of carbon emissions per year.
that said, I don't expect everybody to be putting up solar panels, or wind turbines on their roof...
+ there is some hypoctracy involved with driving ethanol powered cars, the ethenol is made from wheat, i.e. the 1st world countries will be growing grain in excess to power cars whilst the 3rd world countries still don't have any to eat!

for all those people who have porch lights on outside at night, those could easily be replaced from your mains supply to those self recharging solar powered lights that are cheaply available from most highstreet hardware stores, and I think even woolworths, or ASDA walmart, it's not like you have to shop at a specialist store!
people could easily replace their kettles with higher efficiency ones.
same from cookers/firges/freezers/washing machines and ligthbulbs.
it was on the radio last week that if everyone in the UK were to replace 1 regular fillament lightbulb in their house with an energy saving one that the power board would be able to shutdown one entier power station!
that's one light bulb.
costing about a pound each.

I also niticed that they do LED lightbulbs as a direct replacement for those halogen spot lights that people have. rated a 1/25th of the power with the same light insensity!
also the energy saving bulbs tend to last longer.
like the thread starter said, it's not about car pooling (though that is a good idea and also help if someone else pays half your petrol bill!), it's not about hybrid cars, or using chip fat instead of diesel. or any other crazy idea that won't be supported in a few years!
It's just the little things that one person could do to make a difference...
a great example for us PC users would be that you could use 5400RPM drives in your PC rather than 7200rpm cause they draw less power. (they are cheaper too).
you could just unplug the LED's on the front...
Use a better heatsink so the fan doesn't spin as far.
use speed controlled fans.
use a case with a better airflow so it doesn't generate as much heat.
The possibilities are endless! and every little (no matter how little) helps!
+ not only do you help the environment, but you also save money! be that in not replaceing lightbulbs so much, or a massive reduction in your power bills!
