It's permanent because the AMD processors will be considered old technology and they will be wanting to liquidate their stock. I heard that AMD is coming up with a rival. Not sure though. But I would like to see Intel's Core Duo and AMD's competitor duke it out in benchmark tests. That would be sweet!

but is it just considered old technology because of the conroe, or will the AMD's no longer be very good

They will probably be considered as "old technology" and "no longer very good" in comparison to and because of Conroe.
