Inspection and testing

When the instillation is complete, the instillation must be checked before it is put into use. The IEE regulations state:

‘Before any installation is put into service it must be tested and inspected to ensure that it complies, as far as is practicable, with IEE regulations.'
‘Part 7 of the IEE regulations gives details of testing and inspection requirement.' ‘The regulation initially calls for a visual inspection, but some items such as correct connection of conductors etc. A preferred sequence of tests is recommended, where relevant and is as follows:
1)Continuity of protective conductors.
2)Continuity of ring final circuit conductors.
3)Insulation resistance.
4)Insulation of site built assemblies.
5)Protected by electrical separation.
6)Protected by barriers and enclosures provided during construction.
7)Insulation of non conducting floors and walls.
8)Polarity.
9)Earth fault loop impedance.
10)Earth electrode resistance.
11)Functional testing.

This application is a TN-S instillation, and because of this, tests 4, 5, 6, 7 and 10 are not required.

1.The continuity of protective conductors: All protective conductors including main equipotential and supplemental bonding conductions must be tested for continuity using a low reading ohmmeter.

3.Insulating resistance: An insulating resistance test is performed in order to ensure that the insulating of conductors, accessories and equipment is in a healthy condition and will prevent dangerous leakage currents between conductors and earth. It also indicates whether any short circuits exist.

8.Polarity: this is a check to make sure all fuses and single pole switches are in phase conductor, all sockets outlets and similar accessories are correctly wired.

9.Earth fault loop impedance: over current protective devices must, under earth fault conditions, disconnect fast enough to reduce the risk of electric shock. This is achieved if the actual value of the earth fault loop impedance does not exceed the tabulated maximums values given in the IEE regulations. The purpose of the test therefore is to determine the actual value of the loop impedance.

11.Functional testing: this is where a ‘residual current devices' (RCD) is fitted. It is essential that they operate with in set parameters.

To proove that I have carried out the required inspection and testing, I have filled in an 'Electrical Installation Certificate' (TO BS7671). Information included in this is about the instillation site and the testing which was required.
