I have a simple question,

If a system supports a sata hard drive- will it also support sata II ?

yeah, if your system supports just SATA, sata2 won't work, and if you try enabling it in your bios, something bad will happen. lol

to find that out, you need to either go to the manufacturer's website if it is not custom built or find out the model of your motherboard.

Actually, you can enable a SATAII hard drive to run at 1.5 GB/sec with a special jumper. I believe it is a different size than standard jumpers, but I'm not sure. So, if you're stuck with a SATAII drive and you only have SATA, you aren't completely out of luck, you just won't be able to use the drive to its full potential.
