blue-ray will not be compatable with any cd or dvd drives. so you will have to have two separate players. they will not make a player with both laser types in them because sony and toshiba could not agree to do so. its in the wikipedia entry for blue ray i think.

Actually there will be Blu-Ray/HD-DVD players. LG Electronics is planning to release one later this year. It's not hard to have players read BD and HD-DVD because they both use blue-violet lasers to read the data. The only difference is the way the data is stored.

I just don't. HD-DVD in my eyes is the lesser of the format. I don't want Blu-Ray to die for HD-DVD to suceed. They either both do, or Blu-Ray does.

As for the drives not playing both. Whats all this about Sony's PS3 being able to play all kinds of media? Surely that must have two lasers?
