Just about to build mates computer..

Shall I use Dual Channel DDR333 512MB 2X 256 or
Single Channel DDR166 1GB? 1X512 2X256

Dual Channel. Wider Data path will increase the performance.

Yes, Dual channel has a 128-bit data path, as to where single has only 64-bit. More RAM doesnt allways mean faster. but sure does help

I'm considering buying an external hard drive,but which is better, with a fan or without, there seems to be two schools of thought.

i think one single stick of 1gig just because u get faster transfer rate and you have more room to make it 2 gigs so u dont have to use virtual memory.
