.....But, I'm going to have to look into that, as far as the legal matters concerning this as I'd like to know myself if it is illigeal.
Just read the EULA, it states you are not allowed to alter the game code

there are no backups of the original exe. what are you talking about?
you go to the installed game directory on your pc and copy the original .exe file to a different location for future use. That way when you drop the no cd cracked .exe in there and it replaces the original you will have a copy. then if you decide you want to play online you just copy paste the original .exe file back into the game directory, replacing the cracked one, and you're good to go online

You could try a virtual cd rom program (I use Daemon Tools). Basically, you copy the disc as an image (I use Nero) and use virtual cd to mount the image. It's just like having another CD ROM. I use it all the time. Should work in cases like this. I also know their are mods out their that allow you to run games without the CD. Where you would get them, I'm not sure. Try the virtual CD, see if it works.
That works too, but I could never be bothered with Daemon Tools, each to his own I guess
EDIT: What we're talking about here is using a modified .exe file or tool such as Daemon Tools to negate the inbuilt code that requires the game to verify the existance of a genuine CD before running, once thought to be solely the realm of game d/load pirates it is now a wide spread practice for several reasons, original disks getting scratched, the hassle of inserting a disk each time you change games etc, some game makers have released no cd patches with their games, for instance, I have a no cd patch for CoD2 single player, yet I do not need a CD for multi player because activision made multiplayer cd free, it works on the keycode not the cd.
NOTE PLEASE: I do not advocate the pirating of games, I buy all my games, if everyone pirated games the makers would go broke and the world would be a sadder place, please support game makers, small things like a no cd patch used by legal game owners is a point that has been contentious for ages.
