I am graduating high school this year and will be attending college as a Computer Sciences major and am wondering what Laptop would be a good choice. I am bringing a desktop for gaming/web design needs so I really just need a laptop that will be able to take notes, play movies, browse the web, and run some other small software programs. I don't need some super computer, but I also don't want the thing to run wicked slow. I would like to spend around 1k or less for it so I still have some money left over. Any suggestions?

I'd look into a low-end Pentium 4, Sempron, or Turon. I've done basically the same thing with my little laptop.

Compaq has some fairly nice deals on laptops...

The Dell Inspiron E1505 is a pretty nice one. It's about $750-ish now that it's on sale. Fairly powerful. Nothing near a powerhouse, but it'll get things done with the Intel Core Duo processor it has.

The XPS range are fantastic.
