Linux requires a different file system. such as windows using FAT32 or NTFS, linux has alot of different file formats for the partition. This can be accomplished by using fdisk. Ill edit this post momentarily, with a link to an fdisk tutorial

so i would just do all this with fdisk in dos? or do it with the linux command prompt.

You must be obessed with the concept of "refreshing".

when you boot from cd, you will go through some steps with setting up the drive, hence part of why i recomended SuSE linux, because it has a very user friendly installer. Vectorlinux and the others mostly use fdisk aposed to a gui. for ease of install i would go with SuSE, start with that, then get familiar with it, then go from there to more advanced configurations.

do i nescessarally have to install from a cd, or can i just install from files on my HD?

it has to have a boot loader for it. usually LiLo. its not like software.
