my old pc is cluttered with viruses, registry errors and general crap so ive decided to format it

however when i start my pc with the windows XP installer CD in, with my BIOS settings set to boot from my CDROM drive it comes up with "Press any key to boot from CD" but wont let me press any of the keys on my keyboard, it then goes to the screen which says windows did not shut down properly and again i cant use my keyboard

however, the keyboard works fine in the bios and in windows

any ideas of what i can do?

Thats a weird problem check if you have it first booting device not second or third

i have the same problem on my old pc. its because its a usb keyboard so i have to swap it to an older one

ive had a similar issue before, i think its cause it might be a usb keyboard, when i put in an old PS2 one it worked fine, so maybe give that a try :)

Or, in your BIOS, there is an option that you can use USB under DOS mode, which is in your case. Enable it and it will work.
