okay, i have my desktop computer in my room, which has my files, tv, movies, stuff like taht, my ipod is connected to it as a hdd to stream my music off it.

what i want to do is be able to use it like a server, and access the desktop via the internet, and transfer files between that desktop, and laptops on my network,

UPDATE
okay, it would also be okay, if i could setup a FTP server on my host (desktop) computer, but be able to access it (through ftp) on any computer on the internet.

Hmmm... what Internet Connection do you have?

I'm not sure what stuff you'd need for this, but automatically I would presume you would need Windows Server 2003. For desktop sharing, its completely over my head but I know you would need Server 2003 for whatever program that could do that. Same for FTP, I don't think you can get FTP on XP Pro.

You'd also need a good internet connection, as well as probably a static-ip address and some kind of DNS setup, but how to get either I do not know. You should check out a more specific site I think.
