Hey, Any Help Would Be Appriciated (Building Computer)

No problem dude. And ill post the aim convo here, for everyone to read, in case they wanna change something, or give better advice or whatever.

Here is the convo in case anyone wanted to review it.

e n g lish15x: hey
Arrizx: Hey
e n g lish15x: so about the dual core vs single core ... why is single core better for gaming ?
Arrizx: Well.. Right now.. Games can only utilize one core at a time, so really the dual core is just sitting their, taking up space. Although, thats not the case for all games, like FEAR
e n g lish15x: what about battfield 2 and call of duty 2 ... which i guess are pretty recent
Arrizx: Well.. No. I dont beleive that they are dual core utilized. I Think BF2 has a patch out for all Intel users to utilize the HT technology.. But other then that, I really dont think their is anything
Arrizx: But you need to realize as more games come out, more will be using the dual core.
e n g lish15x: true ... it seems to be more and more popular
Arrizx: Well its also better for runnig more then one program at once.
e n g lish15x: what does an Athlon X2 2.2 GHz processor equal up to in the single core processors
e n g lish15x: ohhh
Arrizx: Well.. Thats a diffuclt comparison
Arrizx: I really cant answer that. Its just that the clock speeds vary so much.
e n g lish15x: ohhhh
Arrizx: Although, want me to show you a single core processor just for kciks?
e n g lish15x: ya sure
Arrizx: Okay
Arrizx: Price about?
Arrizx: Anything, or what?
e n g lish15x: under 350 - 400
Arrizx: Okay
e n g lish15x: also .. Recommended Operating System: 3 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
RAM: 1 GB System Ram
Video Card: ATI X800 series, Nvidia GeForce 6800 series, or higher video card
e n g lish15x: thats for elder scrolls oblivion
Arrizx: This is probably the best single core processor that Amd offers
Arrizx: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103529
Arrizx: And about that.. Roughly, an Amd 3000+ is equal to the Intel Pentium 3.0ghz
e n g lish15x: ohhh okay
e n g lish15x: and another thing is more than a Gig of ram over kill
Arrizx: Nah.. No
Arrizx: Are you familiar with the page file
e n g lish15x: nope
Arrizx: or virtual memory?
e n g lish15x: nope
Arrizx: well do you understand what ram is and does
e n g lish15x: doesnt it basically enhance the refresh rate of the tasks on the computer ?
Arrizx: Sure, lol.. Well here let me lay it our for you
e n g lish15x: alright
Arrizx: The page file in windows, is the same thing as virutal memory. Essentially what the page file does it section off a peice of the hard drive, and uses it as ram. but mind you its the hard drive. So its mechanical, and really isnt even close to as fast as ram using the memory conroller. The thing is that with the hard drive it is alwayys spinning, loading data, saving, ect. right? Right. Well.. if you also put the weight of using the page file on it, it just gets stressed out. Thtats why it runs slow, if you have a shit hard drive. But if you get 2gb or more of ram, windows doesnt need that page file. So the hard drive, can do its own little thing, and, the ram is finally totally utilized.
e n g lish15x: wow .. that actually made sense to me, awesome
Arrizx: Really, anything over 4gb is over kill
Arrizx: Unless used for a server
e n g lish15x: ya
Arrizx: but dont worrya bout that
e n g lish15x: hah yea
e n g lish15x: so .. what is your system set up, im just wondering
Arrizx: Thats why Im gonna reccomend for your comptuer 2gb of ram
e n g lish15x: alrighty
Arrizx: Lol.. nothing special. Its an Intel Pent 4, 630. 3.0ghz, 1gb ram, 160gb hard drive
Arrizx: sound blaser live! sound card, that doesnt work
Arrizx: and its a dell.
e n g lish15x: thats better than mine
e n g lish15x: haha
e n g lish15x: i hate dell
Arrizx: Im scared to list the Gcard
Arrizx: but its the x300
Arrizx: Lol
Arrizx: sad huh
e n g lish15x: hah if i knew what that meant i would laugh
e n g lish15x: i have .... a geforce mx4 420
Arrizx: I dont even know what that is, lmao.. But put in perspective, my video card, is no better then standard intigrated graphics
e n g lish15x: hah
e n g lish15x: from what my friend told me intigrated grpahics suck
e n g lish15x: thats what i have though
Arrizx: they do suck
Arrizx: my computer gaming abilities suck
Arrizx: lol
e n g lish15x: hah, what games do you play
Arrizx: Css, hl2, area 51, guild wars day of defeat source
e n g lish15x: is that first one Counterstrike
Arrizx: yea
Arrizx: counter strike source
e n g lish15x: whats h12 ?
e n g lish15x: ohhh
Arrizx: Half Life 2
e n g lish15x: ohhh okay
e n g lish15x: no battfield 2, or morrowind/ oblivion ?
Arrizx: just to let you know, counter strike source is a mod of half life two
e n g lish15x: oh alright
Arrizx: I would if my computer could support it, and if I had the cash to get a new video card
e n g lish15x: yea
Arrizx: but right now, im getting a new moniter, and a system in my car
e n g lish15x: ah system in cars
e n g lish15x: i just sold mine so i could get money for this haha
Arrizx: Lol smooth
e n g lish15x: i figure stock sound in my truck is okay
Arrizx: Well not for me!!
e n g lish15x: hah
Arrizx: I happen to like lots of bass
e n g lish15x: well whatever your cup of tea is
Arrizx: suppose so
e n g lish15x: ... now wait you know the vid card you sent me. the umm His radeon ?
Arrizx: HIS. tahts the brand. Also known as High Tech
e n g lish15x: ohhh
Arrizx: Its the Radeon x800xt or something like that
Arrizx: very nice card
e n g lish15x: i dont understand that ... why is there different brands of like the Geforce and such
e n g lish15x: and radeon
Arrizx: Their called chipsets
e n g lish15x: ohhh
Arrizx: Radeon is Nvideas, and Ati's is Radeon
Arrizx: their are others but yeah
e n g lish15x: alright
Arrizx: need explinations on video cards, and whats in them?
e n g lish15x: sure .. another question is though, the 256 mb of ram on the HIS card is that much of a difference than the 512 mb ram on the better ones
Arrizx: oh yes. Thats a huge difference.
e n g lish15x: oh okay
Arrizx: Although, in my opinion ((not all)), but pixel pipelines are more important
e n g lish15x: what are those
Arrizx: Ok.. here comes another long one...
Arrizx: Lol
e n g lish15x: haha go ahead i got time on a sat night at 5am
Arrizx: Think of it like this.. You have the core clock of a video card. Also known as the GPU. Its same thing as the processor, but for a video card. Anyways, you have the core clock on the gpu, and pixel pipelines are the things that move the data from one place to another. Now if you have too high of a core clock, and not enough pixel pipelines, it bottlenecks its self, because that data cant make it from point A to point B. But say you have the same core clock, but more pixel pipelines. That means that the data can freely move from one place to the other. Its like lanes in a highway. You have 16 cars going down 12 lanes, and 16 cars going down 16 lanes,. and the lanes are the pipelines. So which one is faster? The 16 lane highway is faster. becayse it moves all cars at once.
Arrizx: As for memory and memory interface, all I know is that bigger is better.
e n g lish15x: wow that made sense also ...
e n g lish15x: wanna help me build a complete system haha
Arrizx: sure
Arrizx: just tell me your budget
e n g lish15x: i would say 1500
Arrizx: great number
e n g lish15x: it can prolly sway to about 1700 also though
Arrizx: ill try and keep it cheap, but damn, this system is gonna kick
e n g lish15x: hah
e n g lish15x: hey another question ... is there any brand thats better than any other at making RAM and is DDR the best ?
Arrizx: Well, for Amd systesm you have no choice. ddr is all you can have. although, for video cards GDDR3 is the best you can get. And for an intel based system, you can actually have ddr2. And when the new Amd socket Am2 comes out, ddr2 will also be avaliable for use.
e n g lish15x: ohhh okay
Arrizx: just to let you know im going to post this
e n g lish15x: its cool. hey thanks alot for helping me, i appreciate it alot, i was gonna buy a XPS game system threw dell but that seemed awful
Arrizx: No problem dude. Anyways.. Low budget dell systems, and laptops, all kick ass. including their moniters. but when you get into the mutlimedia systems, they over price them
e n g lish15x: ya i like my monitor i have threw dell
Arrizx: i bought my system for like 1400, with surround and all that, but still, i could get the same shit myself for like 800
e n g lish15x: its a 19 in LCD ultrasharp
e n g lish15x: ya
Arrizx: oh for real?
Arrizx: how do you like it.
Arrizx: thats the montier iw as looking at
e n g lish15x: its gorgeous
Arrizx: i think im getting that montier tomorrow actually
e n g lish15x: get it , you wont regret it.. it has beautiful picture
Arrizx: awesome, cant wait now!
e n g lish15x: hah
e n g lish15x: how much you getting it for ?
Arrizx: like 254, because its 25% off
e n g lish15x: straight from dell ?
Arrizx: i beleive so, yes
e n g lish15x: awesome
Arrizx: how much was yours
e n g lish15x: i cant remember
e n g lish15x: i got it about 2 years ago
e n g lish15x: this is my dads computer
Arrizx: oh
e n g lish15x: i ordered it though and picked everything
Arrizx: oh tight
.

e n g lish15x: hows the system going
Arrizx: pretty good, have a quesion though
e n g lish15x: yes
Arrizx: do you care what the case looks like
Arrizx: do you need like lights, or what?
e n g lish15x: those arent neccesary, whichever is best is just fine
Arrizx: ok, and what kind of sound are you using. 5.1?

e n g lish15x: on my dell ?
Arrizx: well.. hmm. so you dont have any speakers?
e n g lish15x: i dont have anything for this computer
Arrizx: are you going to need speakers, mouse, keyboard, montier included in the price?
Arrizx: ok
Arrizx: so you need EVERYTHINg
e n g lish15x: haha yea
Arrizx: okay
Arrizx: guess i better take out the 500 G card, lol
e n g lish15x: what the video card ?
Arrizx: yeah, its the best one on the market
e n g lish15x: :-\
Arrizx: but if you need everything, its too expensive
e n g lish15x: alrighty
Arrizx: like your sound high?
Arrizx: err
Arrizx: lound?
Arrizx: loud*?
e n g lish15x: hmm idk ... i just have right now 4 altic lansing speakers with a sub
Arrizx: how many wats?
e n g lish15x: not sure
e n g lish15x: is there anyway to check on the computer
Arrizx: no
Arrizx: oh well
Arrizx: ill just assume you like loud
e n g lish15x: i guess so
Arrizx: lol
e n g lish15x: hah

Arrizx: any moniter preference?
e n g lish15x: LCD 17 inch prolly
Arrizx: not any bigger, or widescreen?
e n g lish15x: 19 if its affordable
Arrizx: k
Arrizx: damn
Arrizx: too high
e n g lish15x: how much
Arrizx: i need to change some parts out
Arrizx: 1900
e n g lish15x: eeek
Arrizx: i need to change out the video card, sound card, ram
e n g lish15x: alright
e n g lish15x: you can go to 17 inch lcd if you didnt already
Arrizx: well, lets see what happens with this first
e n g lish15x: k
Arrizx: updated
e n g lish15x: alright do you have the links ?
Arrizx: yeah
Arrizx: go look at your thread
e n g lish15x: awesome
e n g lish15x: is that a bad motherboard ?
Arrizx: why
e n g lish15x: i was just wondering if it was, i didnt know that they were around 80 dolllars
Arrizx: well they go from like 60 to 140
Arrizx: this one will suit you just fine
e n g lish15x: ohhh
e n g lish15x: alright
Arrizx: the other are for sli, and crossfire. and all those setups are is dual video cards
Arrizx: and you dont need that
e n g lish15x: ohhh okay
e n g lish15x: so you went with that HIS card, what did you say you had before ?
Arrizx: well the HIS brand makes several different chip sets
e n g lish15x: ohhh
Arrizx: and i chose a different one then previously
e n g lish15x: oh alright
e n g lish15x: should it still work just fine with oblivion call of duty and such ?
Arrizx: lol oh yes
Arrizx: no problems at all
Arrizx: but
Arrizx: you should wait to get some input on the system, before you buy
Arrizx: because i may i have screwed something up
e n g lish15x: which part of the system ?
Arrizx: just wait till alvino or TRD sees it
e n g lish15x: who are they ?
Arrizx: i dont know. im just being cautios
Arrizx: they are people smarter then me
e n g lish15x: ohhhh
e n g lish15x: you think they'll check out my thread ?
Arrizx: yeah
Arrizx: tomorrow tho
Arrizx: because alvino lives in the pacific timezone with me
Arrizx: so.. yeah
e n g lish15x: ohh okay
e n g lish15x: the difference between the sound cards, are they even that big of a difference ?
Arrizx: well... i cant tell. but an audiophile can
e n g lish15x: so like it wont sound as good as the other one, if your like playing a game or watching a movie
Arrizx: well it mostly inpacts games, when you like look at someone, and you hear it, and look to the side and its cuts out type of thing
Arrizx: as long as you have a sound card, you will be fine
e n g lish15x: ohhh
e n g lish15x: you think i might be able to find like the keyboard, mouse, monitor etc cheaper on ebay ?
e n g lish15x: and the speakers
Arrizx: you can find it all cheaper on ebay
Arrizx: although.. I personally dont fuck around with stuff on ebay. I mean computer parts, and technology
e n g lish15x: yea i can understand why
e n g lish15x: people are ridicolous sometimes
Arrizx: I got scameed outta 190 dollars off ebay on something once
Arrizx: lol you have no idea
e n g lish15x: hah what was it
Arrizx: Dvd set thing, for my dad
e n g lish15x: ohhhh
e n g lish15x: did he not send it ?
Arrizx: oh well, were getting it taken care of
Arrizx: nope,
e n g lish15x: how are you getting it taken care of ?
Arrizx: we have his home address, and sever other people he scammed
Arrizx: well my dad is a retired cop
e n g lish15x: hah
Arrizx: you do the math
Arrizx: lol
e n g lish15x: thanks alot for the help , again
Arrizx: lol no problem dude
Arrizx: sorry, brb
e n g lish15x: its okay
Arrizx: back
e n g lish15x: alright
e n g lish15x: hmm theres a few things i could skip on i think
e n g lish15x: at the sam's club in town theres a 300gb hard drive for $120
Arrizx: yeah, but this is a 10,000 rpm drive
Arrizx: not a 7200rpm
e n g lish15x: whats that mean
Arrizx: 10,000 reveloutions per minute
e n g lish15x: what would that mean it would do alot faster ?
Arrizx: the little disk in the hard metal casing spins 10 times in a minute
Arrizx: yes, VERY much
e n g lish15x: ohhh
Arrizx: well
Arrizx: how big do you need the hard drive
Arrizx: you could go down to a 78.4 raptor hard drive
e n g lish15x: right now i have a ....
e n g lish15x: 55 gb
e n g lish15x: and i used 42 gb
e n g lish15x: and i dont have any of my games on it
Arrizx: ok
Arrizx: then definetly the 150gb raptor
e n g lish15x: the one i have now ?
e n g lish15x: i mean the one you told me to get
Arrizx: well, if you have a 55gb hard drive, with none of your games on it.. well then you are going to need a bunch more space
e n g lish15x: ya
Arrizx: so you should get the 150 gb raptor hrad drive
Arrizx: the 10k one
e n g lish15x: i wish i would have done this before ... we paid 2700 on dell for my computer and its nothing special
Arrizx: i feel your pain
e n g lish15x: how much did you pay for your dell
Arrizx: 1400, with like 3 year warrentee, 50 dollar mouse, 30 dollar keyboard, and 80 dollar 5.1 system
e n g lish15x: ouchies
Arrizx: and i upgraded from and Intel Pentium D 2.8ghz dual core, to a Pentium 4 3.0oghz single core
Arrizx: i know
e n g lish15x: whats your harddrive
Arrizx: 160 gb, 7200rpm seagate
e n g lish15x: ohhh
e n g lish15x: i have a plan ...
Arrizx: yeah?
e n g lish15x: im going to sell my truck for a cheaper vehicle, that was my original idea ... to pay for college, and my computer and stuff
Arrizx: oh
Arrizx: well dude
Arrizx: you need a laptop for college
Arrizx: or both
e n g lish15x: i was going to buy both
e n g lish15x: haha wanna help me get a dirt cheap laptop just for typing documents and having internet access
Arrizx: you mean make a laptop?
e n g lish15x: well either that or order one
Arrizx: well making one is kinda impossible
Arrizx: although knock your self out with this
Arrizx: http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=iB120S1&s=dhs
e n g lish15x: that wouldnt be too bad
Arrizx: no, although i suggest 512 ram
e n g lish15x: yea i know 256 is ruff .. my girlfriend has a 446 ram on her computer somehow and a 3.0 ghz pent 4
Arrizx: oh yeha
e n g lish15x: how do you get a 446
Arrizx: a 256 and a 128 stick
Arrizx: or
Arrizx: 3x 128
e n g lish15x: idk, her mom bought it off the homeshoppingnetwork
e n g lish15x: biggg mistake
Arrizx: because i should have 1024mb ram, but It only couts it as 1000 its wird how it works
Arrizx: oh, yeah, lol lame
Arrizx: ok, well dude im going to bed, anything else you need?
e n g lish15x: thats it for now ... thanks for all your help, i'll be keeping in contact with you.. thanks again
Arrizx: oh yeah sure dude.
Arrizx: arrizx@gmail.com
Arrizx: thats my email if you want
Arrizx: and i suggest this laptop
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=iB120S2&s=dhs
Arrizx: ok, well dude, take it easy, and ill talk to you later
.

wow it took me like 10 minutes to read that. thought i may point out, arriz said
Arrizx: Radeon is Nvideas, and Ati's is Radeon
i think you meant to say geforce is nvidea...anyway. i think the x1800 would be great for you, and last you a long time. the 4400 would be astonishing, not just for games, but especially for multitasking, it will pretty much take anything you throw at it..

and if you have any other extra monitor laying around, i would just use that for now and spend as much as you can on the PC before you buy a monitor. don't let any monitor's prices set you back from your pc.

but that pc would kick ass, definitely go with a dual core processor, you'll be happier with it in the long run...

here, why don't you go to a retailer that builds them for you, like www.ibuypower.com ....

www.cyberpowerpc.com

go there and customize your pc. click on AMD custom configurator and configure it to your needs, and you'll get a rough estimate of how much it would be, and you can change anything easily...i'm not saying you can order from them, but you could if you wanted to avoid possibly making a mistake yourself, because they'll build it for you...

and not to mention, with all those specs listed earlier, i think you'll need a more powerful PSU (power supply unit) than 420 watts. i'm not so sure if that's enough to power a x1800, x2 4400 and whatnot. but i may be wrong.

from cyberpower, my next build is as follows:

amd athlon x2 3800
2 gigs of ram
nvidea geforce 7900gt
500w psu
liteon dvd-rw cd-rw w/ lightscribe

and all that adds up to roughly 1600, and is a great price

Oops.. Anyways.. Yeah thats a good idea having one of them making it. And, from my setup, its kinda hard to tell. Really didnt think of that. Although, I think that would be fine, im gonna say he should get a bigger one. Like a 520, 550...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817153023

Thats a good one.

No, but if he did, he would need to tone down the video card. Although.. I really dont think he needs it. I think a single, high powered one will be fine.
