you can have upto 127 devices on one usb root hub (although sometimes the two ports on the back can be just one root hub)...
however, a lot of ports are powered by the USB port, so you sometimes end up trying to run 4 USB devices with the power designed to power just one...
it's often better to get a powered hub, (even though these are more expensive), as they can save a lot of headaches when devices start to play up with seemingly no reason at all...

Powered hubs also guarantee a cleaner data transmission instead of a passive one. That way, signal loss is much reduced and data will go through without getting errors.
