What is Nforce?

I see these on the mobo info and I'm not sure what they are and what they do. I've seen Nforce 4 and Nforce 4 Ultra and I can only assume that the ultra is faster(is faster the word?).

So what exactly do these chipsets do? And what do they mean when you buy a new mobo?

Ok, the nForce 4 chipset is basically the chip that rednders the graphics, or it's the graphics controller. Somethgin along those lines, I do know that it does somethign with the graphics. :)

The nForce is a computer chipset created by NVIDIA for AMD CPUs. At launch, the nForce offered innovative integrated features not found on other Athlon chipsets of the period, including optional integrated video, dual-channel DDR SDRAM support, and high quality integrated sound based on NVIDIA's own sound chip. The nForce4 is the newest version which features PCI Express.

The nForce chipset was remarkable for several reasons. It introduced dual channel memory to the mainstream market, doubling theoretical throughput, offering excellent performance most especially in workstation class benchmarks. This was deemed necessary largely because NVIDIA anticipated the era of high performance onboard graphics. Fast high bandwidth DDR based main memory was required, to make sure the video hardware was not constantly stalled waiting for the main memory.

If you want to know the difference between nforce 4 ultra and regular nforce chipsets, look here:

Thanks guys, can always count on you hehe.

OK, so with ultra explained which mobo would you choose?

I know they're practically the same thing but I just want to get a good mobo.

One seems more stable (the reviews same to say this)

but the other is faster and uses the ultra chipset.

I'm a novice and need help choosing a good mobo for my first computer project.

Thanks.

I would get the Ultra one. It uses newer SATA II hard drive interface while the other one doesn't. The Ultra version has one more audio jack then the regular one. Must have more functionality. Speed wise, they're all the same. I just love using SATA II, that's it. It's only $30 more, approx. The Ultra comes with more accessories too. Looks pretty.

So that means I can read my hard drive faster and retrieve data quicker? Or something along those lines?

Yeah, everything's suppose to be faster but in reality, I feel those speeds aren't reachable yet. They are possible speeds so further future improvements on this technology will allow you to have much faster access times.

Hmm, sounds good.

Guess I will get that mobo.

Thanks for the replies. I do appreciate it.

Well, I need to go to sleep now, so good night.
