New 24-karat gold CD and DVDs

Have you guys heard about these new CD and DVDs? Memorex plans to release in April a new line of CD-Rs and DVD-Rs called the Pro Gold Archival Media. They're suppose to last up to 300 and 100 years (for DVDs). The disks has a 24-karat gold layer, scratch-resistant coating and improved dye to avoid the bad side effects of ultraviolet light, humidity and heat. Also, Memorex is bought out by Imation in case you're into mergers and all that sort of stuff.

Crap, I meant to put this in the General Hardware and Software section :(

I'm still waiting for those blue ray discs... but... those are pretty nice.. I wonder what the price on those bad boys are?

The Blu Ray Discs Are going to be good, Only problem is the seek time that they have, Immagine searching a 100Gig Hard Drive for a song or folder, but having to do it every time you want to use that hard drive.

Edit: High Hundreds, Low Thousands? WTF are you smoking?

If your talking about the Memorex CDS:
Memorex said:
Memorex Pro Gold Archival CD and DVD media will be available at several major retailers this April. Suggested retail prices for CD-R will be $11.99 for a three-pack with storage cases and $19.99 for a five-pack with storage cases. Suggested retail prices for DVD-R will be $14.99 for a three-pack with storage cases and $24.99 for a five-pack with storage cases.

And if you mean the Blu Ray Discs, The cost for making Blu Ray discs is estimated to be only double the price of HD DVDs, Which are more stable and more efficient than Blu-Ray

Blu-Ray is nice, but slow. 4x is the projected speed of the BD Drives...:(

How much are these disks?

As for Blu Ray, according to the Blu-ray Disc Association, the overall cost of manufacturing Blu-ray disc will in the end be no more expensive than producing a DVD. As production volumes increase the production costs should fall and eventually be comparable to DVDs.

Will Blu-ray be backwards compatible with DVD?

Yes, several leading consumer electronics companies (including Panasonic, Philips, Pioneer, Samsung, Sharp, Sony and LG) have already demonstrated products that can read/write CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs using a BD/DVD/CD compatible optical head, so you don't have to worry about your existing DVD collection becoming obsolete. Although it's up to each manufacturer to decide if they want to make their products backwards compatible with DVD, the format is far too popular to not be supported. The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) expects every Blu-ray Disc device to be backward compatible with CDs and DVDs.

What about Blu-ray for PCs?

There are plans for BD-ROM (read-only), BD-R (recordable) and BD-RE (rewritable) drives for PCs, and with the support of the worlds two largest PC manufacturers, HP and Dell, it's very likely that the technology will be adopted as the next-generation optical disc format for PC data storage and replace technologies such as DVD±R, DVD±RW, and DVD-RAM.

What's the difference between Blu-ray and DVD?

Parameters:

BD-ROM

Storage capacity (single-layer): 25GB
Storage capacity (dual-layer): 50GB
Laser wavelength: 405nm
Numerical aperture (NA): 0.85
Protection layer: 0.1mm
Data transfer rate (1x)
Data transfer rate (movie application):
36.0Mbps
54.0Mbps (1.5x)
Video compression:
MPEG-2
MPEG-4 AVC
SMPTE VC-1

DVD-ROM

Storage capacity (single-layer): 4.7GB
Storage capacity (dual-layer): 9.4GB
Laser wavelength: 650nm
Numerical aperture (NA): 0.60
Protection layer: 0.6mm
Data transfer rate (1x)
Data transfer rate (movie application):
11.08Mbps
10.08Mbps
Video compression:
MPEG-2

Overall, looks like Blu Ray is looking good already. If the PC can standardize this, Sony will be bery successful. The high storage medium will be great for us since we deal with a lot of files (movies, picts, music, etc).

TRD, you know how these gold ones are meant to last from 100-300 years, how long do normal cds and dvds last?

The life span for DVDs varies by manufacturer. The current range is between 30 and 100 years. The unrecorded shelf life of a CD-R or CD-RW disc is conservatively estimated to be between 5 and 10 years. The life span of a written CD varies greatly. There is no definite time depending on the manufacturing process. But generally, manufacturers have claimed life-spans ranging from 50 to 200 years for CD-R discs and 20 to 100 years for CD-RW.

The gold ones are rated at 300 years which is incredible. DVDs got out of the sub 100 year range to a definite 100 year life.

Those are going to be for like businesses like boeing, and the government.. Because there gonna be the only people that can afford them..

Damn we must all be poverty stricken if these are the prices for them

Suggested retail prices for CD-R will be $11.99 for a three-pack with storage cases and $19.99 for a five-pack with storage cases. Suggested retail prices for DVD-R will be $14.99 for a three-pack with storage cases and $24.99 for a five-pack with storage cases.
