multicore processors

i got thinking about the dual core (not double, dual core specifically), design. Doesn't commiting to this technology limit computers? When you put another processor on the same die as another one, the chip in itself becomes much more dense. How does this not create massive amounts of heat? In theory, if you ever got to the point where both cores were operating near their highest capacities, would that not turn into massive amounts of heat? Especially since the chip is so dense? Wouldn't it make sense for AMD and Intel to not really look at single core processors as something thats soon going to be obsolete, but rather trying to increase the work load of a single core processor?

edit: poo sorry meant to put this in the processors forum thingy
